With 175 votes, the proposal to raise the minimum wage was adopted. It will become 50% of the current national average, which for 2023 is 850 leva.

The minimum wage for the next calendar year is to be set by 31 October of the current year and is to be no less than 50% of the gross average wage for the country for the twelve months preceding its setting.

If they pass a second reading, the changes are due to come into force on 1 January.

“We have finally reached important issues for Bulgarian society. At this moment it is important to increase the minimum wage, because because of inflation many people are close to poverty,” said the co-chairman of “We Continue the Change” Kiril Petkov.

Recall that the previous wage increase was on 01.04.2022 and then it was raised by 9.2% and became BGN 710.

The purpose of raising the minimum wage is to propose an increase in the minimum wage to contribute to reducing poverty among workers and inequalities in income distribution.
