The job market is constantly metamorphosing, from how and where we do our work to the skills we need to thrive in the workplace. According to data from the professional platform LinkedIn, the frequency of changing job skills has increased by 25% since 2015 and is expected to increase by 65% by 2030 globally.

Around the world and at home

The integration of artificial intelligence and automation has opened up new opportunities and challenges for professionals and companies alike, shaping the future job market. LinkedIn’s list of the fastest-growing jobs for 2024 shows which roles have emerged in the last five years and the trends shaping the future of the job framework in this country and around the world.

In Europe, the job market has undergone a transformation – competition for jobs has doubled in the last year alone with the emergence of new positions that didn’t exist twenty years ago. The fastest growing jobs in 2024 will be related to sustainability, artificial intelligence and business development according to the social platform.

The company’s report is based on a study of millions of jobs from January 1, 2019 to July 31, 2023 to calculate the growth rate for each position. According to their findings, two-thirds (67%) of European employees are considering changing jobs this year, despite increasing competition in the job market.

In 2022, there were between 2 and 5 candidates vying for a job in the UK and France, whereas now there is only one vacancy for approximately one in eight candidates. 37% of European employees are looking for higher salaries to cope with rising inflation, while 19% feel more confident in their abilities and are looking for better positions to advance their careers.

Which jobs are increasing?

The fastest-growing jobs vary across the European countries surveyed, but the general trend shows an increase in roles related to AI, sustainability and cyber security as companies look to address these fundamental trends impacting the economy.

The most in-demand positions include: sustainability manager, artificial intelligence engineer, and cybersecurity analyst. The top five positions in the German capital of Berlin, for example, are Sustainability Manager, Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Project Manager, Marketing Manager and Sales Manager.

Despite some variation in the most in-demand occupations, a telling trend emerges across European capitals – many of the top positions are related to sustainability in companies, in particular the position of Sustainability Manager, present in five of the twelve capitals surveyed, including Sofia.

“As we approach 2024, it’s clear that artificial intelligence and sustainability are two of the key drivers changing the job market,” says Josh Graf, LinkedIn’s managing director for Europe and Latin America. “Jobs in these areas represent some of the fastest growing positions across Europe.”

55% of outsourcing agents across Europe believe their companies are struggling to find qualified candidates because they lack non-traditional qualifications.

According to Graf, many of these jobs didn’t even exist twenty years ago, but the business continues to change at such a rapid pace that adaptability is becoming paramount for leaders of large teams.

Upskilling and reskilling will be critical to attracting and retaining new talent.
